A Clockwork Orange is a 1971 science fiction film directed by Stanley Kubrick, starring Malcolm McDowell, Patrick Magee, Carl Duering. It drew a wide audience and shaped its genre.
Plot
In a futuristic Britain, Alex DeLarge is leader of a gang of "droogs": Georgie, Dim, and Pete. They engage in an intoxicated evening of "ultra-violence", which includes beating a vagrant and fighting a rival gang. They beat writer Frank Alexander to the point of crippling him, and Alex rapes Alexander's wife while singing "Singin' in the Rain". The next day Alex's probation officer, P. R.
Production
Written by Stanley Kubrick, the film was produced by Polaris Productions Limited. Wendy Carlos composed the score. John Alcott handled the cinematography. The film runs 137 minutes. The crew and editing refined every shot.
Reception
On a budget of $2,200,000, A Clockwork Orange grossed $27,033,812 worldwide at the box office. A critic consensus praised its screenplay and score.
Legacy
The film's influence spread across the century; its narrative and tone echo in much later cinema.
