Back to the Future is a 1985 science fiction film directed by Robert Zemeckis, starring Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Crispin Glover. It drew a wide audience and shaped its genre.

Plot

Back to the Future is a 1985 American science fiction film directed by Robert Zemeckis and written by Zemeckis and Bob Gale. It stars Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover, and Thomas F. Wilson. Set in 1985, it follows Marty McFly (Fox), a teenager accidentally sent back to 1955 in a time-traveling DeLorean automobile built by his eccentric scientist friend Emmett "Doc" Brown (Lloyd), where he inadvertently prevents his future parents from falling in love – threatening his own existence – and is forced to reconcile them and somehow get back to the future.

Gale and Zemeckis conceived the idea for Back to the Future in 1980.

Production

Written by Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, the film was produced by Universal Pictures. Alan Silvestri composed the score. Dean Cundey handled the cinematography. The film runs 116 minutes. The crew and editing refined every shot.

Reception

On a budget of $19,000,000, Back to the Future grossed $381,109,762 worldwide at the box office. A critic consensus praised its screenplay and score.

Legacy

Back to the Future is part of the Back to the Future Collection franchise; its influence and legacy endure in later cinema.
