Fargo is a 1996 crime film directed by Coen brothers, starring Frances McDormand, William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi. It drew a wide audience and shaped its genre.

Plot

Fargo is a 1996 black comedy crime film written, directed, produced and edited by Joel and Ethan Coen. It stars Frances McDormand, William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi, Harve Presnell, and Peter Stormare. McDormand plays pregnant police chief Marge Gunderson, who investigates after a car salesman, Jerry Lundegaard (Macy), hires two dimwitted criminals (Buscemi and Stormare) to kidnap his wife to extort a ransom from her wealthy father.

Filmed in the United States in early 1995, Fargo premiered at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the Palme d'Or.

Production

Written by Ethan Coen and Joel Coen, the film was produced by PolyGram Filmed Entertainment. Carter Burwell composed the score. Roger Deakins handled the cinematography. The film runs 98 minutes. The crew and editing refined every shot.

Reception

On a budget of $7,000,000, Fargo grossed $60,611,975 worldwide at the box office. A critic consensus praised its screenplay and score.
