Goodfellas is a 1990 gangster film directed by Martin Scorsese, starring Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci. It drew a wide audience and shaped its genre.
Plot
Goodfellas (stylized as GoodFellas) is a 1990 American biographical gangster film directed by Martin Scorsese, written by Nicholas Pileggi and Scorsese, and produced by Irwin Winkler. It is a film adaptation of Pileggi's 1985 nonfiction book Wiseguy. Starring Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, Lorraine Bracco and Paul Sorvino, the film narrates the rise and fall of Mafia associate Henry Hill and his friends and family from 1955 to 1980.
Scorsese initially titled the film Wise Guy and postponed making it; he and Pileggi later changed the title to Goodfellas.
Production
Written by Nicholas Pileggi and Martin Scorsese, the film was produced by Winkler Films. Michael Ballhaus handled the cinematography. The film runs 145 minutes. The crew and editing refined every shot.
Reception
On a budget of $25,000,000, Goodfellas grossed $47,072,327 worldwide at the box office. A critic consensus praised its screenplay and score.
Legacy
The film's influence spread across the century; its narrative and tone echo in much later cinema.
