In the Mood for Love is a 2000 romance film directed by Wong Kar-wai, starring Maggie Cheung, Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Siu Ping-Lam. It drew a wide audience and shaped its genre.
Plot
In 1962 British Hong Kong, Shanghainese expatriates Chow Mo-wan, a journalist, and Su Li-zhen (Mrs. Chan), a secretary at a shipping company, rent rooms in adjacent apartments. Each has a spouse who often works late, leaving them alone during overtime shifts. Due to the friendly but overbearing presence of Su's Shanghainese landlady, Mrs. Suen, and their bustling, mahjong-playing neighbours, Chow and Su are frequently left alone in their rooms and rarely dine with the other tenants.
Production
Written by Wong Kar-Wai, the film was produced by Block 2 Pictures. Michael Galasso composed the score. Christopher Doyle handled the cinematography. The film runs 99 minutes. The crew and editing refined every shot.
Reception
On a budget of $3,000,000, In the Mood for Love grossed $15,867,968 worldwide at the box office. A critic consensus praised its screenplay and score.
Legacy
