Metropolis is a 1927 science fiction film directed by Fritz Lang, starring Gustav Fröhlich, Brigitte Helm, Alfred Abel. It drew a wide audience and shaped its genre.
Plot
Metropolis is a 1927 German expressionist science-fiction silent film directed by Fritz Lang and written by Thea von Harbou in collaboration with Lang, based on von Harbou's 1925 novel of the same name (which was written as a treatment). It stars Gustav Fröhlich, Alfred Abel, Rudolf Klein-Rogge, and Brigitte Helm. Erich Pommer produced it in the Babelsberg Studio for Universum Film A.G. (UFA). Metropolis is regarded as a pioneering science-fiction film, being among the first feature-length ones of that genre.
Production
Written by Fritz Lang and Thea von Harbou, the film was produced by UFA. Gottfried Huppertz composed the score. Günther Rittau handled the cinematography. The film runs 148 minutes. The crew and editing refined every shot.
Reception
On a budget of $5,300,000, Metropolis grossed $1,350,322 worldwide at the box office. A critic consensus praised its screenplay and score.
