Saving Private Ryan

Saving Private Ryan is a 1998 war film directed by Steven Spielberg, starring Tom Hanks, Tom Sizemore, Edward Burns. It drew a wide audience and shaped its genre.

Plot

On June 6, 1944, soldiers of the U.S. Army land at Omaha Beach during the Normandy invasion, suffering heavily from artillery and machine gun fire from the fortified German defenders. Initially dazed by the ferocity of the defense, 2nd Ranger Battalion Captain John H. Miller leads a surviving group up the cliffs to neutralize the coastal defenses firing onto the beach, ensuring the success of the landings. The United States Department of War receives communication that three of four Ryan brothers have been killed in action; the last, James Francis Ryan of the 101st Airborne Division, is listed as missing.

Production

Written by Robert Rodat, the film was produced by DreamWorks Pictures. John Williams composed the score. Janusz Kamiński handled the cinematography. The film runs 169 minutes. The crew and editing refined every shot.

Reception

On a budget of $70,000,000, Saving Private Ryan grossed $481,840,909 worldwide at the box office. A critic consensus praised its screenplay and score.

Legacy

Its legacy endures through a remake, a sequel and a lasting franchise; later cinema cites its influence and symbolism.
