The Lion King is a 1994 animated film directed by Roger Allers, starring Matthew Broderick, Moira Kelly, Jeremy Irons. It drew a wide audience and shaped its genre.

Plot

In the Pride Lands, a pride of lions rules over the kingdom from Pride Rock. King Mufasa and Queen Sarabi's newborn son, Simba, is presented to the gathered animals by Rafiki, the mandrill who serves as the kingdom's shaman and advisor. Mufasa's younger brother, Scar, covets the throne and plots to eliminate Mufasa and Simba so that he may become king. When Simba grows into a young cub, Mufasa shows him the Pride Lands and forbids him to explore beyond its borders. Mufasa explains to Simba the responsibilities of kingship and the "circle of life," which connects all living things.

Production

Written by Jonathan Roberts and Linda Woolverton, the film was produced by Walt Disney Pictures. Hans Zimmer composed the score. The film runs 89 minutes. The crew and editing refined every shot.

Reception

On a budget of $45,000,000, The Lion King grossed $763,455,561 worldwide at the box office. A critic consensus praised its screenplay and score.

Legacy

The Lion King is part of the The Lion King Collection franchise; its influence and legacy endure in later cinema.
